The Producers opened on Broadway April 19th, 2001 and proceeded to sweep the Tony's that year. It has a unique history having been a very successful cult film featuring Zero Mostel, as the producer and Gene Wilder as the accountant who inadvertently clues Producer Max Bailystoker into the unique vagaries of Broadway accounting, where a loss, can suddenly become a major gain for the producer, thru the avid good will of widows and the rich, who are perpetually drawn to the allure of investing in a Broadway show. This interesting tale, from the mind of Mel Brooks, brought him back to the subject when he decided to make a Broadway Musical out of the non-musical film. The theme of the show and film is based upon the Nazi era, certainly not a fit subject for a musical, but nevertheless it worked, and became the hottest ticked on Broadway. This recording based upon the film, then Broadway musical, then Hollywood musical is here presented with all of the song highlights. Again, all created through the versatile and brilliant comic genius of Mel Brooks.
